Harvard Doesn’t Teach This….

“They don’t teach you this at Harvard Business School, but it’s all about people.”
– James Koch, Co-founder and Chairman of Sam Adams

People skills, soft skills, social skills whatever you choose to call it, is that “X” factor that works to create relationships. I don’t know about Harvard’s curriculum but the power of a high
“EQ” is being touted widely. “EQ” is term given for emotional intelligence and research shows those with high EQ skills are much more successful in business and in life! Here is a link to an article about this theory and guess what… it is filled with quotes from a Harvard researcher: https://psychcentral.com/lib/what-is-emotional-intelligence-eq/

We encourage clients to do some self examination into their EQ skills. That involves thinking through skills such as: do I show empathy? Do I pick up and respond appropriately to social cues from others? Am I  focused and engaged while someone is speaking?  Good listeners make the best negotiators! When you learn what makes people tick, you can learn how to gain their support. Most of all, your intentions and behavior must be authentic, others can sense an imposter a mile away. These skills can be honed to improve your career path and that path leads to success.

FYI- Studies have shown absolutely NO correlation between IQ and business success! I’m sure you know what I’m going to say next and you’d be right, high EQ IS an accurate predictor of business success…everyone enjoys working with or for a people person!

I grew up in St. Joseph, Mo and graduated from Missouri Western State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in social psychology. I was raised in a very entrepreneurial household, my father ran his own business and both sets of my grandparents were self employed! Favorite quote: "Dost thou love life? Then do not squander time, it is the stuff life is made of" - Benjamin Franklin I've loved that quote forever, I guess that is why I am committed to living in the now and enjoying life to the fullest with an attitude of gratitude.
